At one point in time, I would have told you that I was somewhat of a self proclaimed social media expert. I knew how to grow followers organically without paying for them or paying for ads. I knew how to engage with my tribe, and I looked forward to creating content for my social media platforms that would provide helpful gems to those who would come across my post in their timelines. Then a funny thing called an algorithm began to play with how those previous efforts were impacting engagement results. No matter what the effort, follower numbers began to decrease, trying to comment on x amount of profiles a day, and liking x amount of posts, including following and unfollowing to balance out followers vs, following ratios just wasn't working for me. I was posting three times a day and then a social media expert said nope just post once a day. I was told make your copy more interesting, and someone else said, wait don't forget your call to action... even though I always included one. NOTHING WORKED! I gave up. The thing I actually loved to do I absolutely hated. I decided to no longer care and hung up my self proclaimed title for good. But then I took a course on SEO and it hit me..;
I couldn't just turn my back on social media. Not if I wanted to help more girl bosses with their businesses which meant having to expand my reach. So what in the world did the SEO course have to do with my ah-ha moment with social media? One portion of the course talked about how these Google bots and how they don't just look at the content on your website, inbound or outbound links but they also look at things like mentions of your brand and social media presence. I went from diligently taking notes in my virtual classroom to looking at my screen with my mouth wide open and then of course quickly rolling my eyes. This now meant that if I was interested in brand positioning that I could no longer disregard social media as an unpredictable nuisance. Instead, I had to take some real action and I did immediately. What I want to share with you was three things I did to
1. Increase my followers 2. Increase engagement 3. Find time to manage it all! So let's jump right into it! How I Increased my followers
The first thing I do is go to my peers' social media page. Now before we go any further this is a tactic that I use for Instagram specifically. Once I go to my peers' page I then go through their list of followers and then start to follow the followers that I feel fit my targeted demographic. I give it at least a week and then use an Instagram unfollow tool, and unfollow anyone who hasn't followed me back. Doing this will help you manage your follower vs. following ratio. And for those of you who aren't sure what I'm referring to, the amount of your followers should be higher than the amount of those you are following. Now here is the thing about this tactic, you have to do this daily. If you do it weekly or monthly, your number will fall. So when you are watching your favorite tv show, grab your phone and start racking up your followers.
Increase engagement
Once you started following more people, you will notice new posts from your new "friends". At this point some of them have started following you while others haven't quite yet. Your goal is to interact with your social media community liking and commenting on others' posts. What you will do here is like and comment as you scroll through social media. Now I am a huge advocator for being a great steward of your time, so I set timers in IG and give myself an hour limit for being on social media a day. That means that as a business owner you will have to spend less time perusing through timelines for entertainment and more time focusing on connecting your tribe to your brand. The more you interact with others, the more they will interact with you when you post!
Another way I engage is through my stories! Ask your tribe questions, have them engage in polls, share what awesome new smoothie you just tried out, or how you are working on something new. This will help your tribe engage with you at a higher rate than just your feed posts, so each day you should try to at least try to post to your stories. Managing IT All
Now for those of you who find it hard to imagine how in the world could they ever manage this. And for those of you find it even harder to see themselves do this on multiple platforms, I want you to know that there is a way for you to be able to automate your efforts so that you can get create content and then have the rest of your week free!
1. Create a content schedule for yourself.This will help you plan out your theme for the week, as well as help you identify which day is going to be your content creation day. 2. Once you have a creation day you should schedule your posts using a online scheduler. I use Planoly because I can create a layout that I like, schedule all of my posts for the week, create story posts, and I can post to IG, FB, and Twitter, and Pinterest! Using a tool like this allows you to run effective social media strategies while still pouring time and energy into your business! Share some of your social media gems, what has worked for you in the past, or how you have applied what you learned here in the comments below! We love to hear from our bosses!
